Q: Does anyone know of an affordable place in Monterey where I could rent a bicycle while I am in town? I looked up one place that has a website but it was outrageously priced. TIA! (Heather Moss)
A1: I believe that the Portola Plaza Hotel rents bicycles but have no idea about cost. J. Dysart
A2: On the Monterey Questions page, they list Adventures by the Sea(which has an office by the Portola), and Bay Bikes. (J. Bloy)

Monterey Tips

If you have any information about Monterey to share with others, please add it here.

  • While the 17 Mile Drive does cost money, it is totally worth it. It is an incredibly beautiful drive with a lot of places to stop, take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Bring a picnic and make an afternoon out of it!
  • Check out Best of Around Town Results of the 2005 Best Of Monterey County.
  • Take time to stop at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is a fantastic space and very calming. Parking within walking distance and nice lunch food inside the aquarium.
  • Drive down to Carmel to see the fascinating architecture. Drive a little further to Big Sur and eat at Nepenthe overlooking the ocean.
  • I suspect that I'll be the only librarian/skateboarder at the conference, but for any others -- there's a fun little skatepark a few blocks from the conference center.
  • I'll may be the only non-librarian (I'm a programmer)/geocacher at the conference. Hoping to find a few nearby geocaches on Saturday afternoon and/or on Sunday. Anyone interested is welcome to joing me (John Fereira)
  • Need early morning coffee? Plumes Coffee & Tea, Monterey-400 Alvarado Street (831) 373-4526 is just two blocks from the conference center; a great drip coffee house and it opens at 6am.

Monterey Questions

Q: First newbie question! How do-able is it to drive from SFO to Monterey? Flying in on Friday and wouldn't mind a leisurely (but not *too* long!) drive. Cheers, Amanda.
A: Looks like a couple of hours?
A2: It's do-able and I recommend doing it. I did it last year - there are 2 routes to choose from. We gave ourselves 4 hours so that we could make pit stops along the way; it's a beautiful drive with some nice little towns to stop at. One warning - last year there was a pumpkin festival along the route that caused a lot of traffic - but even that didn't ruin our drive. Feel free to contact me for more info (Nicole Engard - nengard (at) gmail (dot) com)
A3: I drive down every year. It is a nice and easy drive that you can do with a normal Northern California map.
A4: Welcome to Monterey. You have several options for your drive. You can take Highway One all the way from San Francisco to Monterey. On a clear day, you will be met with spectacular ocean vistas. Stop along the way to see the harbor seals and otters! Allow about 3-4 hours for this drive. Another choice is Highway 101 from San Francisco, and then a hop to Highway 156 to take you into Monterey. Not as pretty, but not bad! Allow about 3 hours for this trip. Finally, if you really want to see the countyside, take the San Francisco Bay Bridge to 880 which will lead you to Highway 17, a beautiful forested highway which will take you past Santa Cruz (stop if you can) and into Monterey on Highway 1. Although Highway 17 is spectacular it is also a windy, sometimes narrow road and Highway 880 is no picnic!
A5: I used to live just over the hill in Los Gatos. From SFO, take 380 to 280 to 17 rather than route 101 to 17. 280 is far more scenic. Optionally, take route 92 off of 280 over the hill into Half Moon Bay to route 1 rather than go all the way to highway 17. Then take route 1 south to Monterey. There are several other scenic options I can recommend if anyone is interested (and has the time).
